Why were Kakao M artists removed from Spotify?

Yesterday February 28th, a Spotify spokeperson told NME that Kakao M’s music wouldn’t be available from March 1, 2021 because of license expiration.

The representative said, “We have been working with KakaoM over the last year and a half to renew the global licensing agreement, so that their artists’ music would remain available to Spotify’s 345M+ listeners in nearly 170 markets around the world.” Sadly, the deal has come to an end.

On the other side, Kakao M says that Spotify had just recently notified them of the licenses’ expiration. It’s rumoured that the international streaming service wanted to negotiate both overseas and Korean licenses at the same time, and that they pulled this cards as a means to threaten Kakao M.

The streaming giants continue to negotiate and hope to come to an agreement soon as K-pop fans all over the world express their discontent.
