Three kittens found huddled under garbage in an abandoned garage had eyes so crusted with infection that a few more days without help would have cost them permanently. Months later, they are healthy, mischievous, and still tangled up in each other every chance they get.

It was faint, pitiful meows that led rescuers to an abandoned house in the New Jersey suburbs, and then to the dilapidated garage behind it. Underneath piles of garbage, three kittens, only four weeks old, were pressed into a single ball of fur, their cat eyes sealed shut.
"If not rescued, they would have sadly lost their eyes," New York City Animal Rescue Girls shared with LoveMeow. Their mother stayed close by, but she was so malnourished that her milk had dried up, leaving her with nothing left to nurse them with.
Rescuers scooped up the whole family at once and immediately started doing what they do best: caring.

The trio needed heavy treatment for their infected eyes, cleaned and medicated carefully, day after day. They were also fighting coccidia, a common intestinal parasite in young rescues, so their foster bathed them, fed them, and kept them warm through every step.
In those early days, the three siblings stayed curled together in one huddle. They cried whenever one of them had to leave the group for medicine or a bath, so their foster learned to move quickly, scooping and returning each kitten to the pile as fast as she could.

"They slept a lot, nuzzled together, and sometimes you could not tell where one kitten started and one kitten ended," the rescue shared. They had each other, and now they had someone fighting for them too.
Their foster gave them names inspired by horse breeds, chosen in honor of the New York carriage horses that advocates hoped would soon retire to sanctuary. Appaloosa is the calico and the only girl, Palomino is the orange and white boy, and Caspian is the tuxedo boy.

Little Appaloosa, the smallest of the three, needed extra attention. Her sweet kitten eyes took longer to heal than her brothers', and her foster kept a close eye on her medication and her appetite.

Caspian had already come close to losing everything once, huddled in that garage. Then he had a second scare, when he became constipated and severely bloated, the kind of complication that turns dangerous fast in a kitten his size. "Were he not closely monitored, he could have died again," the rescue shared.
His foster brought him back to the clinic the next morning rather than wait and see. Multiple enemas and medications later, Caspian was in the clear.

Today, at just over two months old, all three kittens are the picture of health, and their personalities are shining through. Appaloosa springs onto her foster's chest and tucks herself under her chin, then turns into a fierce little lioness the moment a toy is in play, growling and guarding it from her two much bigger brothers.
Palomino has become the resident love bug, flopping over to present his belly to anyone who walks by. Caspian, the biggest of the three, is secretly the biggest baby, more interested in being held than anything else.

The siblings remain as bonded as the day they were found, with wrestling matches turning into hugs and tumbles every day. Soon they will be spayed, neutered, and fully vaccinated, and then the search will begin for a home willing to take them together, in pairs, or alongside other playful young cats.
"Like all our rescues, these three would not have survived without being found in time," the rescue openly shared with LoveMeow. "We love these sweethearts so much, and they deserve a long, happy life."

They found each other first, in the worst circumstances a kitten can start life in. Whoever adopts them is getting a lioness who guards her toys like they're rare treasure, a love bug who flops over the second he sees you, and a leader who secretly wants to be held.
