Wanna One, I.O.I, X1 and IZ*ONE – Why your favorite groups disband?

Produce 101 is one of the most famous South Korean survival programs. The show collected one hundred and one trainees (their gender depending on a season) and limited their number to the final eleven through several challenges:

  1. Individual evaluation
  2. Cover song battle
  3. Position battle
  4. Concept battle
  5. Debut battle

Those tasks and trainees don’t differ from any other survival program so why Produce 101 became so famous? The answers to that question are also the reason why your favorite groups disband.

The first cause was the elimination process being in the hands of the audience. The votes sent by the public were the only determinant of who would debut. The idea may have been shocking but even more surprising to the public was the scandal behind it. In 2019, it was revealed the decision process was manipulated by the shows’ producers and other industry officials. The public, outraged by the favoritism, pushed for the disbandment of the Produce 101 groups promoting at the time. Unfortunately, they succeeded in halting the promotions for X1 which eventually led to the group’s premature end.

The second rule differentiating Produce 101 from other shows is the temporary nature of created groups. CJ E&M’s decision to focus on the groups for only a limited period assured their success. The company could promote their group more intensively thanks to time restrains limiting conflicts between trainees’ companies. The additional pressure put on fans to support their short-lived favorites prompted them to buy more merch resulting in higher income for both CJ E&M and the artist.

Produce 101 fame, and therefore, the success of I.O.I, Wanna One, and IZ*ONe came at the price of their short existence.
